How it works

Loss on drying measures all volatile matter, water determination measures water specifically, and water conductivity assesses the ionic purity of pharmaceutical water. The monograph says which applies.

Tests offered

Loss on drying (USP <731>)

Determines the amount of volatile matter of any kind driven off under the specified conditions, which USP <731> defines as the loss on drying value. Where water is the only volatile constituent, USP points to water determination instead, as the individual monograph specifies.

Water determination (USP <921>)

Measures the water content of articles that are hydrates or contain adsorbed water. Water determination by Karl Fischer titration is available. USP <921> describes more than one method type and the monograph for the article names which applies; the compendial procedure for your material is confirmed at quote.

Water conductivity (USP <645>)

Measures the electrical conductivity of pharmaceutical water as a check on its ionic purity. USP <645> explains that water dissociates into ions in a predictable way with pH and temperature, and that dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide also form ions that affect conductivity.

Sending samples

Send the material or product sealed and labeled, with its storage conditions.

Tell us the monograph or specification, the tests you need and the number of samples. We work to the current official USP-NF unless you name another applicable edition, and confirm the sample amount at quote.
