How it works

These are routine quality checks on raw materials and finished supplements. Each follows the procedure named in its title or in your specification, and the result is reported against that document.

Loss on drying and water by Karl Fischer answer different questions: one measures the volatile matter driven off under the specified conditions, the other water only.

The vinylpyrrolidinone test uses HPLC: the monomer is separated from the polymer and the rest of the sample on a chromatographic column and measured against a vinylpyrrolidinone reference standard.

Tests offered

Average tablet or capsule fill weight

Weighs the agreed number of tablets or capsule contents and reports the average fill weight for comparison with the target. Individual unit weights can be included in the report when agreed. Tell us the number of units and the target.

pH value

Measures the pH of the material, or of a solution or suspension of it prepared as your procedure states, with a calibrated pH meter.

Dry residue

Measures the residue that remains after a liquid preparation, such as a tincture or liquid extract, is evaporated and dried under the procedure's conditions.

Loss on drying (European Pharmacopoeia)

Measures the loss in mass on drying under the conditions of the European Pharmacopoeia procedure named for the material. The result is the volatile matter driven off under the specified conditions, which can include more than water.

Loss on drying (USP)

Measures the loss in mass on drying under the conditions USP <731> sets, which the chapter defines as the volatile matter of any kind driven off under the conditions specified; it can include more than water.

Water content by Karl Fischer

Measures water specifically by Karl Fischer titration, for materials where loss on drying would include other volatile matter.

Organoleptic characteristics

Records the appearance, color, odor and, where the specification calls for it, taste of the material against its description. It is a conformity check, not a measured value.

Macroscopy

Examines a whole or cut botanical by eye and low magnification for the features its description or monograph names. It supports identity; it is not a content test.

Lactose and sucrose content by UV/Vis

Determines lactose and sucrose by a UV/Vis procedure scoped to those two sugars. It is not a full sugar profile.

Tannins content by titration

Estimates tannins by titration, reported as the reference substance the procedure names. It is a group result, not a measurement of individual tannins.

Limit of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol by GC-FID

Checks diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol against a limit by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, for example in glycerin and other ingredients where your specification sets that limit.

Vinylpyrrolidinone content by HPLC

Measures vinylpyrrolidinone (1-vinylpyrrolidin-2-one, also called N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), the monomer from which povidone is made, by HPLC. In povidone and related polymers it is a residual-monomer result; tell us the monograph or specification it is compared with.

Sending samples

Send the raw material or finished product sealed and labeled; for fill weight, send the number of units your plan requires.

Tell us the procedure or specification you work to. We confirm the sample amount at quote.
