How it works

Fatty acids are separated and measured by gas chromatography. A fatty acid composition is usually reported as each fatty acid’s percentage of the total fatty acids defined by the method, which is not the same as its content in the whole oil or product. Where you need mass content, for example milligrams per gram, the denominator and basis are agreed at quote. Ethanol is measured by gas chromatography.

Results can be stated as a composition or as content in the material, and for omega-3 oils as free acids, ethyl esters or triglycerides. Tell us the basis your specification uses; results are not converted between those forms unless your specification defines how.

Tests offered

EPA/DHA by GC

Measures eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by gas chromatography. Omega-3 oils can be triglyceride oils or ethyl ester concentrates; USP, for example, describes Fish Oil Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters Concentrate as mainly EPA and DHA ethyl esters. Tell us the form and whether results are stated as free acids, ethyl esters or triglycerides.

Fatty acid composition by GC

Measures the fatty acid profile of an oil or fat by gas chromatography and reports the proportion of each fatty acid.

Fatty acids composition of cod liver oil by GC-FID

Measures the fatty acid profile of cod liver oil by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection.

Saw palmetto fatty acid composition

Measures the fatty acid profile of saw palmetto. USP describes saw palmetto as the partially dried ripe fruit of Serenoa repens, states its total fatty acids on the dried basis, and lists fatty acid methyl ester reference standards for it.

Stearic acid and palmitic acid by GC

Measures stearic acid and palmitic acid by gas chromatography and reports each.

Ethanol content by GC

Measures ethanol by gas chromatography, for example in tinctures and liquid extracts.

Sending samples

Send the oil or material sealed, labeled and protected from light, air and heat.

Tell us the material, its form (for example triglyceride oil or ethyl ester concentrate) and the specification or label claim. We confirm the sample amount at quote.
