Insecticide Resistance Testing

Darkling beetle bioassays for poultry houses

Insecticide resistance bioassays for darkling beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus)

We test darkling beetles from your poultry houses to show which insecticides still work on your population, so you can rotate products before control fails.

Method basis: Our protocol follows IRAC susceptibility test methods, with dose per area set from the product label as in EPA product performance guideline OCSPP 810.3500 for premises treatments.

Exposure: Field-collected adult beetles are pooled, held for at least 24 hours and divided into glass test arenas of at least 50 beetles per product. Each product is diluted in deionized water to the label rate or the rate you request and applied as a direct spray, scaled from the label’s gallons per 1,000 sq ft to the arena area, with the delivered dose checked by weight. Beetles stay on the treated surface, alongside an untreated deionized water control.

Endpoints: Beetles are scored at 60 minutes and every 24 hours for 7 or 14 days. Each one is prodded and recorded as normal, knocked down, moribund or dead, and only confirmed mortality counts at the end.

Resistance call: Final mortality for each product is classed by WHO criteria: 98 to 100% susceptible, 90 to 97% possible resistance, below 90% resistant.
